Dippin' Dots Frozen Dot Maker + Bonus Set Review

This is nothing but a mold that makes your 'frozen treats' into tiny balls. The mix that comes with it is really bad. It's nothing even close to the real Dippin' Dots. You can buy popsicle makers at Walmart for $2 that do the same thing, just a different shape. I had to have this when it came out because of all the money I was spending at the mall. I do not recommend this piece of junk unless it sells for $4.99 or less.

This is my first ice cream maker I keep the bowl in the freezer so that it is always ready to use.This machine is real easy to use I just mix up my ice cream mix (I use the mixes that can be bought in a store any of these can be used as long as it doesn't make more than 1 1/2 quarts) then I pour the mix into the machine and in about 20 minutes I have a perfect soft serve ice cream my 4 year old son likes to drink it as a milk shake.

First of all, the booklet has instructions in english and spanish.The english side has 8 pages, and the spanish side has 13 pages.The recipes are in spanish only!I went online and printed waffle cone recipes, but when you pour the mix in the machine and lock it, all of the mix runs out the sides!

Play & Freeze(tm) MEGA Ice Cream Maker, 1 Qt. Review

This worked well, but not for kids. It was too heavy and all the adults ended up having to roll it. They also lost interest in about 10 minutes--which wasn't long enough to finish making the ice cream.
Since the first time we've used it, the adults roll it around (gently as it can leak if you're too rough). We know what we're in for, so it's not too bad.

I picked the big one as the reviews for the smaller one made it sound like the small one is difficult to clean.

Cleaning has been fine on this model. And the ice cream tastes pretty good!

Hamilton Beach 68050 Ice Shaver Snow Cone Slushie Maker Review

Just got one of these and I've been churning out delicious snow cones and slushies every day.I figure it will pay for itself in the next week from all the trips it's saved me trotting down to the local corner mart for the store bought variety.

The new machine arrived well packaged.It's worth reading the couple pages in the manual before assembly and operation but assembly is easy and you will be up and running in a couple of minutes -- literally.The product is solidly built plastic and well engineered.Nothing seems flimsy or makeshift.

About one standard sized ice cube tray worth of ice cubes fits in the top at a time; it self-feeds but you might have to reposition the cubes (a quick and easy task) about once per load to optimize the cutting.It takes about 4-5 minutes to grind through a tray's worth, and it works fine unattended.It's a bit noisy but tolerable -- after all, you are cutting ice.After a few times you will learn the sound of the cut vs the sound of the machine so you know when repositioning the cubes might speed things up.Two trays will fill the bottom bowl.Most pleasant surprise -- no mess at all, contrary to what you might expect. This is tightly engineered, and the bottom container locks nicely in place.

Pro-tip:Put your coffee cup if you use that, into the freezer before filling it to reduce meltdown of the finished product.

Warning:You must order the syrup separately!

Rival IS150 Ice Shaver / Slushie / Snow Cone Maker (in Blue, Green OR Red) Review

I'm leaving my first review below the dotted line just to show why i originally gave it one star. Rival's customer service is very good. When I complained about my snow cone maker's inability to shave any ice, they promptly sent me a new one no questions asked. The new one works great and now I can see why the other reviewers really liked it. The blade on my original one must have been dull or something because this one works like it's supposed to - just like a regular snow cone maker would make it.

I just can't believe the rave reviews I read here. We got one of these from WalMart and it didn't work at all. Not sure what else I could do differently, but it only spit out a paltry amount of shaved ice even after a few minutes straight running. The shaved ice in the cup I was holding next to it was melting before I could even get a tablespoon of shaved ice. Maybe I got a bad blade or something, but if you buy one, save your receipt so you can take it back if you get the same results as I did. I contacted Rival and if they can either tell me what to do or fix it somehow I'll change my tune, but for now I wouldn't even feel good about selling this in a yard sale!

Update: Rival's customer service emailed me and said they were sending a replacement. That could bode well for this review. Will know in 7-10 days.

I originally rated this unit 4 stars, but unfortunately after getting two units that broke immediately, I would change this to no stars if I could.I bought this unit primarily to make crushed ice for tea and cocktails, and to make ice that fits easily into water bottles for biking and school use.It worked well for that application when it worked at all.The advertised settings for ice to make snowcones and slushies are non existent, which was a disappointment.It makes chunks of ice about 1/2 inch big, a few larger and a few smaller.The feet of the machine are little vacuum suckers, so the machine does not slide around during use.UPDATE:Unit worked fine with a minimum of jamming for about 10 days, and then the blades stopped turning.As per instructions, I let it sit to see if there was a piece of ice stuck, but to no avail.The motor buzzed, but nothing was moving in there.I returned it to Amazon for an exchange.I'll give it a second try, but if this unit fails, then I'll return it for a refund and try the Waring also listed on this site.UPDATE 2:The replacement arrived, and lasted through one tray of ice cubes.Again, the unit is jammed for no visible reason.Back it goes, and for a refund this time.Not recommended.

Bosch MUZ 4 EB1 Ice Cream Maker for MUM 4 Kitchen Machines Review

This ice cream maker works just fine. I was a bit hesitant to buy it because of the other reviews, but now I'm glad I did. I've put in two cups of whole milk cherry vanilla jogurt with a little bit of cream and in 15-20 minutes I had a nice batch of frozen yogurt. Just make sure to chill it really well. I rate it 4 stars because of the high price.

In fact, I'm drinking one now!

A friend invited us to dinner and made us slushies for desert with this device, purchased from a local big box store (whose name rhymes with mal-wart). Anyway, the slushies were delicious, made with with Nescafe Ice Java ([...]).

A few days later, while at another big box store (whose name rhymes with gartet), I found one for the right price, and bought it and 3 more cups (we're a family of 4). At another store we found some Nescafe and a bag of ice. We've been making smoothies every day since. We've made them with the Nescafe, chocolate milk, malted milk powder, pina colada mix, and my current beverage, a concoction made with strawberry slushie powder, milk, and frozen srawberries and banana instead of the ice.

Protip: buy the 7-11 aluminum slurpee straws! Eco-friendly and they stay cold. Plus the larger bore eliminates the need for any spoon.

Hamilton Beach 68055 Ice Shaver, Black Review

My fridge's ice maker turns out crescent shaped ice cubes and they don't work well with this machine. The ice went round and round in the shaving chamber but rarely engaged the shaving blade. There just isn't enough downward pressure to force the ice onto the blade.

Update: I went out and bought some ice cube trays hoping that the size or shape of the ice cube was a factor. No luck, this thing still doesn't work so I'll be returning it.

Set of 2 Ice Cube Trays Review

I LOVE these ice cube trays and think they would make wonderful housewarming, advanced student, or bridal gifts. A member of my family has Reynaulds which impacts her ability to use her hands. These are IDEAL for helping. The trays are wide instead of long, so be warned they take more side to side space than I am used to. I did not find them stackable, but the ease of use more than makes up for that. They take some getting used to, as I found I had to balance a tray on my hand to get it to the fridge. If you have baking aides such as casserole or cup cake dishes made out of the new bendable types of food grade materials, then the change will not be hard for you at all. I will experiment more with the water levels of the trays to see if stackability improves, but am currently placing frozen trays over top of unfrozen in the opposite direction to conserve freezer space. I will update if changing levels proves to help.

Chef's Choice 839 Krumkake Express Review

Very good unit to make krumkakes. The recipes that ship with the unit are easy to make and taste excellent. In the weeks following the purchase of this krumkake maker I must have baked over 100 krumkakes and was never disappointed!

Pros: Looks and feels good. Makes cakes up to 6" in diameter and very thin. The barrocco ornament of the iron looks very pretty on the cake.

Cons: To achieve the unified golden color of the cake must use temperature setting no higher than 3, otherwise they come out with patchy color. Because of this, each cake takes approx. 2 minutes to bake.

I have not tried the VillaWare unit, which claims to bake two 5" krumkakes in 30 seconds, but if that's the case than it could be a better choice for someone who needs to accomodate a large party of people fast.

Update 10/17/2008: Friend of mine has the VillaWare maker and she is very happy with it, since she can bake two at a time in about 30 sec. But I have tried her cakes and they don't nearly have that texture and firmness that Chef's Choice unit produces. Some of the difference could be attributed to the recipe variations, but the fast-baked VillaWare cakes just don't get that crispy yet firm sensation that I crave. Just my 2c.

Produces perfect fluffy snowy ice.We use it for Mint Juleps, and they're icy cold and delicious.The snowy ice dilutes the bourbon so it loses it's sharp edge.It's also great for an espresso snow cone, cold espresso with lots of sugar poured over the crushed ice.Toddlers love it with lemon syrup, especially when they're teething.

pretty much.. i bought it as a christmas present for family.. it was so horrible that they actually went out and got another ice cream maker and made ice cream right in front of me.. me, thinking this was incredibly RUDE, took this one back, seeing as they didn't need it.Next thing you know, i find that the batteries don't even FIT!its impossible to get all 4 batteries in comfortably.. and after i finished SHOVING the batteries in, next thing you know, half way through the mixing process the batteries pop out of place and it stops working. the whole thing was a waste of money, and seeing as the ones i bought the present for, kept it without complaints, i went ahead and threw away all returning receipts and everything. so i'm stuck with it. .. waste

Sportsman Ice Cream Maker Review

I started using my new ice cream maker on June 7TH,2009 and two days ago (June 29TH)it started skipping and we had to use the manual crank.
I have called the distributor "Unbeatable sales" 3 times and written an e-mail once. Customer service does not respond or answer their phones.

I think I have figured out now why they only give a 30 day warranty, they know it's a piece of junk. I have lost about $125 buying from this company so I can safely say:
I would never buy again from this company.

Rival Gel Canister Ice Cream Maker - 1 qt. Review

We purchased this ice cream maker a week ago, so far so good!

The Pro's:
It's inexpensive- $29.99 at our local target.

It's small.This means easy to store!I have a small kitchen with limited cabinet space and you can store the base in the freezer.

It's quick- only 10-20 minutes of mixing and the ice cream is done.

The Con's:
It's small.Small is good when it comes to storage, but not so good for capacity.It makes a quart- that's all!This is perfect for us though, being a family of three.Two or three small scoops each and there's even enough left to store in the freezer.

It's not "hard" like store bought ice cream when it's fresh from the mixer.You have to put it in the freezer for an hour of two to harden.We don't mind, but some might so I am mentioning it here! :)

You have to plan ahead:Some of the recipes require mixing the ingredients and refrigerating them.Also, you have to freeze the bowl!!!It takes about 24 hours (recommended in the instruction manual) to freeze the bowl.As I said before, you can store it in the freezer so you can make ice cream on a whim.Some recipes are quick and it IS possible to have ice cream ready to eat in 20 minutes.

Ingredients are not cheap.Most recipes require whole milk, whipping cream and heavy cream.I would not recommend this for someone trying to save a bunch of money by making their own.I spent $20 on ingredients the day I bought this machine.These ingredients did make about 4 quarts of ice cream, so it's not very expensive when you think about it.With some ice creams running $3-$4 a pint, it's not really that big of a difference.We enjoy the freedom of making our own ice cream with healthy, organic ingredients...thus the reason we bought this machine.You can however, make sorbets using minimal ingredients like frozen fruit, sugar, lemon juice and ice.

It is a little loud.It's not a big deal though...just leave the room!If you sit right next to it for 15 minutes, it'll probably be annoying.Just turn it on, set a timer and check in on it every few minutes...easy as pie!
