White Mountain F64304-X 4-Quart Hand-Crank Ice Cream Freezer Review

White Mountain F64304-X 4-Quart Hand-Crank Ice Cream FreezerMy husband bought this ice cream maker for our anniversary present. We tried it out right away and made strawberry/oreo ice cream and it was delicious! The recipes included in the instruction manual surely rival Benand Jerry's!When he first brought the ice cream maker home I was worriedthat it would be noisy because you actually crank it by hand. However, once you get the ice all packed in inside, it is very quiet! It's notdifficult to crank and it only took us about 25 minutes from the time wepoured the recipe in until the time it was firm enough to eat and enjoy!Iwas impressed. The ice cream maker is also nice looking. It is a reddishbrown wood and it washes well inside.Once you are done making the icecream, you can transfer it into a container of your own, or you can justplace the inner container that comes with the ice cream maker directly intothe freezer. We have to transfer it into a tupperware because our freezeris too small. However, most normal refridgerator/freezers could hold theinner container.
I would definately recommend this product as way to makedelicious ice cream. It it a process that everyone in the family canparticipate in.My husband said he bought it because he had such greatmemories of his family making homemade icecream.I am certain thattradition will continue in our family now too!

Product Description:
Many summers ago, ice-cream socials centered around families getting together, each cranking out its favorite ice cream for all to enjoy. You can still carry on that tradition with this authentic-looking Ice Cream Maker with Crank. The White Mountain Freezer company, which crafts these Makers, has been in business for over 145 years and knows all about making ice cream the good old-fashioned way. In fact, they've developed an exclusive method of mixing the ice cream ??? a triple-motion gear action that properly mixes and beats the entire cream contents of the canister, resulting in the smoothest, creamiest ice cream in just 20-30 minutes. The stainless-steel canister is designed for faster freezing, and the cast-iron dasher and blades will never warp out of shape. The freezer tub is made of New England pine that has been sealed, stained, lacquered and bound with strong galvanized hoops.

Aroma AIC-204EM 4-Quart Wood-Barrel Ice-Cream Maker, Natural Wood Review

Aroma AIC-204EM 4-Quart Wood-Barrel Ice-Cream Maker, Natural WoodI was actually searching for other customer reviews in hopes of finding some helpful hints for this contraption. We purchased this product at Target about a year ago because we had relatives who had such good luck with their old fashioned crank-style ice cream churns. We liked the classic design and the electric mixing option. But we've had quite a bit of difficulty with this. The electric mixer seems to mix the cream too fast--often producing an almost "foamy" result. The crank method produces better results, but the crank mixing mechanism makes a lot of noise and doesn't work smoothly...and it takes a looong time for the ice cream to freeze (over 45 minutes for just a small batch--our salt/ice mixture tested 25 degrees).I was hoping I would find some positive reviews that would be helpful...but we bought a Cuisinart 2 qt. electric Ice Cream Maker tonight instead.:-(Anyone with positive experiences, please review as we'd be happy to dig this thing out and use it for company if we could know there was a way to get good ice cream in the end!Otherwise, I'm afraid that this product had a lot of potential, but is rather impractical--especially considering the fact that more user-friendly electric ice cream machines can be bought at a similar price.

Lello 4090 Gelato Pro Quart Ice Cream Maker Review

Lello 4090 Gelato Pro Quart Ice Cream MakerI have been making ice cream in a Cuisinart macine for years but I wanted to regain my freezer space from the 2 canisters I had to keep ready.. I also wanted to make good gelato since I can't go to Italy all the time. This machine delivers the real experience for both. It also can chill wine in just a few minutes. I had first bought the Lussino 4080 by Musso at about twice the price. It was terrible. Too soft right out of the machine and full of ice crystals when put in the freezer for any amount of time. It didn't get firm, it became a rock. I returned it and got the Lello Gelato Pro instead. It is quieter, has a washable bowl, weighs much less and makes a larger amount of ice cream. It's no contest. This machine is great

Lello Musso Pola 5030 Desert Maker Review

Lello Musso Pola 5030 Desert MakerGot the machine last week. The first time I used it I made two batches and then last night made 6. The machine freezes very fast, twenty minutes seems typical. Some small batches with the bowl pre-chilled around 10. Made a batch of frozen daiquiri, which took a bit longer. I am very happy with the time to freeze.

Also the ice cream and sorbets are very smooth. With recipies as simple as blended fruit and a little syrup (Raw Agave) the ice crystals are very fine and the texture smoother than many other sorbets I have made. The machine has enough torque to freeze these very solid, which greatly helps with keeping them spoonable after storing overnight in the freezer.

As for the cleaning some people have complained that the unit is tough to clean because the bowl is not removable. I have not had any problems and can clean it in a couple of minutes. It is easiest if you let it warm up for five or ten minutes before hand but a wet kitchen towel (warm) or some papertowels wipe it clean in two or three passes. The integrated bowl has no seams or crevices so it wipes out easily. As an engineer this really seems like a superior design even if it is not something that can be thrown into the dishwasher. The only trick to cleaning is to use a larger towel that doesn't need rinsed as often as a sponge, which was a bit tedious. I have had no problem turning it around for a second batch in less than five minutes.

The only problem I had was the first unit I received would not cool. I suspect it was shipping related and Amazon returns had a new unit on my doorstep within 48 hours and offered to reimburse for the return shipping on the defective unit. While somewhat annoying as I was excited about trying the new unit out, I was very pleased with the hassle free experience dealing with Amazon customer service / returns.

In summary the machine is expensive, but if you want or need a fast, high-end machine that produces excellent ice cream and sorbets then don't hesitate. This machine is solid. Everyone who has come over to help try it out is amazed by the speed, low level of noise and the quality of the end result.

Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker - 2 Qt Review

Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker - 2 QtThis is a fun product! You do need to freeze the bowl before use, so as long as you realize that, you should be good. And my first batch was the Vanilla Bean. It was/is to die for. Had I read the directions THOROUGHLY, I would have seen that this particular recipe requires the custard (which you make from scratch) is to be chilled thoroughly prior to mixing it in the machine. This recipe takes a little time but boy is it worth it!! I am sad that the other guy left a bad review for the machine when his beef was with the company's customer service before even ORDERING it. I like the first guy's idea of buying an extra freezer bowl (if you have the storage space). They include recipes for ritas, gelattos, slushies, floats, sorbet, etc. LOTS of fun!

Cuisinart ICE-35 2-Quart Wooden Ice Cream Maker Review

Cuisinart ICE-35 2-Quart Wooden Ice Cream MakerPros:
Excellent appearance, one of the few appliances I have out on my counter, get compliments/questions frequently.
Works well (makes a great cinnamon chocolate ice cream!)
Great warranty
Very durable ice bowl

Cons:
Even with a solid freeze of the bowl you'll need to put the ice cream in the freezer for an hour or two afterwards.Just too soft for more than a little taste.
Slightly cheap inner ice cream mixer apparatus (plastic on plastic gears/blades)
Any heavy mixings added towards end still fall to bottom due to soft consistency and poor stirring

Lello 4070 Gelato Junior Review

Lello 4070 Gelato JuniorI have gone through my share of ice cream makers.I have had the hand crank and electric version of the ice/salt mix and I had the Villaware ice cream maker available here on Amazon, sold it and my old icewater/salt type at a garage sale.None of them compares to the Lello Gelato Junior when it comes to convenience and ease of use.You just dump the ingredients in the little bucket, put the mixer/lid on and go.With other models you have to keep the bucket in the freezer or mess with an icewater/salt combination.Sure it might take some of the fun out of making your ice cream by eliminating the turning of the hand crank, but so does buying store bought ice cream or for that matter store bought butter.
The big plus with this model is that you can even dump in the ice cream mix while it is still warm off the stove (you have to cook a custard ice cream base).Just turn on the compressor a few minutes before you begin and it will start chilling the bucket.
You might be concerned about the noise this machine makes when running, don't be.It is quieter than a microwave running and by far quieter than almost every diswasher on the market.I would say it is louder than my Bosch dishwasher, but my Bosch is the quietest dishwasher you can get. You're not going to notice the noise from the Lello.

A note about their recipie for vanilla ice cream. When it recommends using a vanilla bean, do it.They are very expensive, like $8 a bean, and for good reason. It is the greatest vanilla ice cream you have ever had. The smell of fresh vanilla will forever blow your budget because you won't ever want to use vanilla extract for anything again. Save the rinds of the bean in a small tupperware bowl full of sugar, you can use it for baking or flavored coffee or something.

A few little things to note about this machine:
1. The opening for adding ingredients is small, m&m's are about the largest thing you can reasonably expect to put down the "chute"
2. The timer won't shut off the maker when it expires, just lets you know your ice cream is ready to eat.
3. It weights about 30 pounds or so.If you can't lift that amount easily without straining youself, leave it out on a counter somewhere.\
4. Unless you are the type of person who likes the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard, don't even think of using a metal utensil in the aluminum bowl, you will cringe like never before. Can you say chewing on tin foil with fillings in your teeth?
5. Keep excercising regularly, with this thing you are going to have lots of extra calories to burn.

With a minimum freezing temperature of ?4 degrees F, the Simac Gelato Junior takes only about 30 minutes to satisfy your craving for a frozen confection. Plus, the built-in compressor freezer operates continuously, so you can turn out multiple flavors of ice cream while your guests finish their dinner. A 60-minute electronic timer frees you up for other activities, and an automatic safety mechanism sounds a warning beep if the integrated spatula blade gets stuck. A removable 1-quart bowl, transparent lid, and slim ingredient window all simplify operation, and the unit is also useful for crafting frozen drinks and chilled soups. Though not lightweight at 31 pounds, the Gelato Junior is fairly sleek for its class, measuring 11 by 14 by 12-1/4 inches. Classic™ Electric / Crank Ice Cream Maker Review

Classic™ Electric / Crank Ice Cream MakerMy wife bought this to replace a 1950's model hand-crank machine that we have been using about 5 or 6 times a year since we met, which was 13 years ago. It was given to me and I don't know how much it was used before that but I suspect quite a lot. The tub is made out of fiberglass, the cylinder stainless steel, the crank from steel and a rugged alloy of aluminum. The dash is made of wood and aluminum. We always make the same ice cream each time, mint chocolate chip. It always turns out very well. But it is showing some wear now, as you would expect a 60 year old machine to, even though we used it 4th of July this year (2009) and it worked just fine. We got this one because it had the hand-crank option, and the key as far as I'm concerned to making good ice cream is the option to crank it until it almost can't crank anymore. Lets be real, it isn't less expensive to make your own ice cream (like the description on this machine says); it costs between 15 and 20 dollars to make a modest batch (salt, ice, condensed milk, milk, cream, mint extract, bakers semi-sweet chocolate, food coloring, etc) and don't forget the effort involved. So you want it to turn out right. Anyway, this one came in the mail, so I got it going. I thought I would start it off with the electric motor and when it got bogged down way too soon (like the electric ones always do) I would switch to hand cranking. After 15 minutes the motor was smoking so feeling pity I unplugged it and mercifully attached the hand crank unit. Within 30 seconds the plastic gears were starting to strip and there was no more turning. Very disappointing. If you like ice cream that is basically just cream on the verge of freezing, I guess you will think this unit is good enough; but compared to what I've been using it is just another piece of mass-produced Chinese junk that makes me lament for the quality craftsmanship that used to be available in the U.S. (and made in the U.S.) at a reasonable price. This unit cost $79 dollars and I felt a bit hollow about spending that money on such an obviously cheap machine. Well I guess I sound like an old crank (haha), but I'm a relatively young person who happens to know a little about quality manufacturing. So, I guess I'm going to find some kind of replacement for the rusted hold-down bolts on the old hand-crank unit and keep going with that.

Maxi-Matic Elite Gourmet Old Fashioned Pine Bucket Electric/Manual Ice Cream Maker Review

Maxi-Matic Elite Gourmet Old Fashioned Pine Bucket Electric/Manual Ice Cream Makeri needed this ice cream maker for thanksgiving. got it, took it out the box, inspected, and assembled it. it looked great and everything seemed to be just fine. the instructions advise that you soak the bucket for a couple of hours prior to the first use. on thanksgiving day i soaked the bucket and came back moments later and noticed the water levelwas declining more rapidly than expected. i refilled and tried again. the same thing happened. not a little water was coming out, but a steady, constant stream of significant amount. i could literally see the water going down.i look closer to see where the water is coming from, and i see a crack in the wood on both sides.i can actually move the pieces.well, we figured we would hand crank the ice cream in in a tub to collect the water. after about an hour or more of cranking the machine, it was still easy to turn/crank the handle. what is supposed to happen is as the ice cream freezes, it is supposed to be more difficult to turn/crank. we hand cranked for a little longer with little progress. That is when we used the automatic, electric component. well. after a while, it did finally freeze, but not as hard/firm as it should have if done by hand.

i had used the product so i couldnt return it.

pros: pretty

cons: wood barrel cracks going on both sides of the barrel.this was not visible to the naked eye until it was time to soak the bucket. water left the bucket constantly
did not freeze when using manual hand crank
when using the automatic/electric component, it took a long time, but finally froze. however the consistency/firmness could have been much better and firmer.
took way to long

Rival 8806-BL 6-Quart Oval Electric Ice Cream Maker, Blue Review

Rival 8806-BL 6-Quart Oval Electric Ice Cream Maker, BlueI just received this ice cream maker yesterday and made a batch of french vanilla ice cream. I ordered Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Dessert book at the same time I ordered the ice cream maker and they both came the same day. I used the French vanilla recipe from their book. The recipe is only for one quart so I quadrupled it. I used a lot more salt than the directions with the ice cream maker calls for to get the temperature down and also used a little table salt along with shaved ice. Use enough salt with the ice and you should have no trouble getting the temperature down. The ice cream was done when the motor stopped as per the directions. It only took 18 munutes from start to finish. The brine didn't even run out the drain hole in the can before the ice cream was done. The ice cream was pretty stiff consistency right away. We ate some for a taste test and put the whole can in the deep freeze for about an hour and the stuff set up very well. The ice cream was smooth and not gritty like it can be if it takes a long time to get done. After reading some of the reviews before buying this maker, I had some reservations about buying this particular model. I see now that they were unfounded. I had no problems with it at all. I would recommend this maker to anyone looking for a reasonably priced ice cream maker. Just be sure you use plenty of salt with the ice and be sure your ingredients are good and chilled when you put them together. By the way the recipe I used is excellent. Page 35 of Ben and Jerry's book.

Hamilton Beach 68320 1-1/2-Quart Capacity Ice Cream Maker, White Review

Hamilton Beach 68320 1-1/2-Quart Capacity Ice Cream Maker, WhiteI have used several ice cream makers and by far this is the worst. It is noisy, and takes way to long for the ice cream to churn.Yes, I properly chilled the ice cream mix, yes I properly froze the bowl(second time made sure it was really really frozen. There just is not to the bowl to stay cold enough long enough to do what it needs to do to avoid a soupier mix..although that still can be frozen into ice cream in the freeze, it just gets a little icy.Properly chilled and churned ice cream should take no longer than 20 minutes.and this design just doesn't do it.
It might work if your freezer is large enough to churn it in the freezer.Don't waist your time...or money.. your making more work for yourself buying this machine.
Buy one that is properly insulated to maintain the cold throughout the churning process.Remember a proper machine should take no more than 20 minutes.
It will work, sort of, it is easy to clean, easy to use.

hope that helps

Hamilton Beach 68320B 1.5 Quart Capacity Ice Cream Maker Review

Hamilton Beach 68320B 1.5 Quart Capacity Ice Cream MakerI have this.It freezes the mixture into a nice soft serve in about 30 minutes. The only issue I have with it: the mixture sticks to badly to the sides of the freezing container, you either have to scrape it out, or wait for it to melt (which takes a while, the whole container has to totally warm back up).You loose a quite a bit of the mixture that way, and it locks up the machine and won't stir it anymore because of this, so I end up with about 1/2 of what I put in there.

It is helpful if you want to make two flavors of ice cream, or if you want to cool the warm custard for vanilla ice cream before you freeze it.

I have also used this container to quickly cool items (like Jello which must be cooled for a mousse, raspberry mousse comes to mind :) in a metal bowl. Place any metal bowl on the top of this container. It will be stable and the bowl will get ice cold. The contents will then cool very quickly.

Try this bowl to cool down custard when you are filling pastries. Just pour in the custard and stir with a spatula for a few minutes. Soon, you have creamy, cold custard to fill those pastries.

I recommend keeping one of these in the freezer at all times. There are just so many more uses! Use it everytime you need to cool a liquid quickly. You will love the results.

Lello 4080 Musso Lussino 1.5-Quart Ice Cream Maker, Stainless Review

Lello 4080 Musso Lussino 1.5-Quart Ice Cream Maker, StainlessOur family loves this frozen dessert maker. We have used it at least onceevery night since it arrived 2 weeks ago. It's so simple to make adelicious frozen dessert with this machine, just mix up your ingredients(or you can just turn on the "churn" switch and have this machinemix it) and pour it in. 30-40 minutes later your dessert will be frozen toperfection.
The machine has a 60 minute timer which acts as a masteron/off and two buttons, one to "churn" (mix) and the other to"chill".I often start it just before we begin our meal so we'llhave a freshly made dessert when we're done.
This machine does anexcellent job of making frozen desserts. We've made perfect fresh lime, cantaloupe and blueberry sorbets as well as delicious smooth and creamy icecreams like Mocha, Chocolate and Honeydew Melon. Because this machine is soeasy to use, it allows you to be creative, often, and without the fuss ofice, salt or prefrozen bowls.
The 1-1/2 quart capacity is perfect for anaverage family, with some to spare, though for big parties you'd have tomake more then one batch. Of course multiple batches are no problem withthis machine and we've done 3-4 batches in a row more then a few times.Unfortunately since the bowl is not removable (the blades and cover are)you'll have to clean it out with a sponge and warm/soapy water betweenbatches of different flavors.
You will need to have a permanent space forit since it is heavy and not the type of appliance you'd want to move inand out of a cabinet. This machine is really beautiful too with itsstainless steel body/blade and eye appealing curves, it occupies aprominent spot in our home and has been a conversation piece. I consider ita practical "luxury" appliance.
This is a solid well builtmachine that should last a long time, my only concern is with the plasticcover, though it does seem sturdy enough. The plastic cover does howeverallow you to see your dessert while its being made, great for kids (andadults) anxious for dessert.
If your family loves frozen desserts as muchas ours does, this is the machine for you. I've been looking at it forawhile now, I'm so glad I decided to buy it.

Deni Automatic Ice Cream Makers with Candy Crusher Review

Deni Automatic Ice Cream Makers with Candy CrusherI've made ice cream with this machine four times and it has been delicious every time with every recipe that I have tried. I made a mistake the first time I used it (I don't count that time), I didn't read the instructions as closely as I should have, the Deni should be turned on and the cylinder should be turning at all times, if you stop the machine during the process, it doesn't turn back on and your ice cream process is over, finished or not! Lesson learned... :)

Cuisinart ICE-40 Flavor Duo Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker Review

Cuisinart ICE-40 Flavor Duo Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet MakerI was so excited to finally receive this ice cream maker in the mail that I did it all:I make sorbet, frozen yogurt and ice cream. All came out very well.Note:eat the frozen yogurt immediately as it becomes very hard in the freezer and looses the smoothness commonly associated with frozen yogurt.I really enjoy having the two bowls.I've made two separate batches of desserts as well as a double batch. My freezer is stocked and I've never had so many wonderful choices of frozen dessert!

White Mountain F64306-X 6-Quart Hand-Crank Ice Cream Freezer Review

White Mountain F64306-X 6-Quart Hand-Crank Ice Cream FreezerDon't let the high price on this ice cream freezer fool you into thinking you're getting something that's high quality. We ordered one in late November, anticipating lots of fun "cranking" together at family get-togethers over the holidays. The "trial run" in early December went fine. But the second time we got the freezer out of the box -- on Christmas evening -- we saw that metal filings had shifted out of the crank mechanism. Then, as we attempted to make just our second batch of ice cream, the crank handle broke.(The crank mechanism seems to be poorly made, which overly stresses the crank handle.)Not what we expected from a $159 ice cream freezer.

Donvier 1-Quart Ice Cream Maker Review

Donvier 1-Quart Ice Cream MakerCaution: Rave Review
Why can't I get decent chocolate chip ice cream? That's what I want to know. Chocolate chip, plain, unvarnished and perfect, is a rapidly vanishing breed in the highly segmented world of commercial premium ice cream.
The Donvier lets you create the fresh flavors you want, when you want them. So, I get my chocolate chip with rich veins of beautiful Ghiradelli's milk chocolate chips and just a few semi-sweet for the heck of it. My wife's favorite is fresh peach and that's what she gets. You know what -in season, it tastes very much like a beautifully ripe peach! Only better.
Freeze the container overnight. Dump in the ingredients. Pop the lid on. Stir. Wait a bit. Stir some more. Repeat for ... minutes or so. Yesterday, I made a quart of ice cream while I was in the midst of preparing dinner for six - it was just no problem. The ice cream got such rave reviews from our guests that I was troubled at how easy it was to make.
Chocolate chip TIP: Wait until it's partly frozen up before you dump in the chips - they don't all settle down to the bottom that way.
We've had our Donvier for almost ten years and have never had a problem. Hey, what could go wrong? it's a metal bowl with a plastic handle that you turn inside it. I suppose you could break the handle with an excess of joie de vivre, but they're pretty cheap to replace. Ah, you ask, but is it easy to use? Well, turning a crank in a bowl is a fundamental human activity - *anybody* can do it!
No more need you buy Ben & Jerry's chocolate chip peanut turbot ice cream at 3 bucks a pint or so. The Donvier makes it just too easy to make incredibly good, fresh ice cream yourself.
Buy one. Now. You won't regret it.

Rival 8550-X 5-Quart Wooden Electric Ice Cream Maker Review

Rival 8550-X 5-Quart Wooden Electric Ice Cream MakerI have made probably 30 batches of ice cream since I bought this machine about one and a half years ago. It makes a batch in about 20 minutes and, if you follow the directions, (which are easy), you get perfect ice cream every time! It comes with a recipe book too. I would highly recommend making the vanilla ice cream and adding two very ripe bananas and two ripe mangos. You won't be disappointed! Good quality all around!

Hamilton Beach 68220 1.5-Quart Capacity Ice Cream Maker, White Review

Hamilton Beach 68220 1.5-Quart Capacity Ice Cream Maker, WhiteOK, first off, all the 1.5qt ice cream makers on the market -- this one, Cuisinart's, and Krups' -- are fundamentally the same. It's a metal bucket full of some fluid that you put in the freezer; it gets very cold, cold enough to freeze 1.5qts of ice cream mix. That, and it's a motor with a mixing arm. That's really it.

So I figured, when I bought this one, that I was getting a deal; it's the cheapest of the three. Now that I've used it a few times, I'm wishing I'd just splurged, spent the extra twenty bucks, and gotten either of the others.

The mixing blade on this model doesn't seem to actually mix very well. I made a cantaloupe sherbet last night and I looked into the bowl as the arm turned, and it was just shoving the sherbet around in a circle. It wasn't churning. The sherbet wasn't frozen solid or anything, it was still pretty slushy. The arm just seems poorly designed.

I think the motor's pretty weak, too. It turns so slowly that it doesn't need to be very strong, they just gear it way down and even a weak motor can push pretty hard. But this routinely gets stuck on bits of ice cream that freeze in a layer on the bottom of the bucket. I made a frozen yogurt, which you have to put in the bucket to start (vs. pouring it through the opening while it's running) because of the thickness of the yogurt, and it had real problems churning after that. I ended up having to churn it by hand with a spatula for a while at the end.

Finally, there are just design details that aren't very good about this. The top of the motor / lid assembly is sloped, and the on/off switch is on that surface and protrudes a bit.

When you take that motor / lid off and set it down, the obvious way to do it is to rest it on its top (with the mixing arm sticking up.) This invariably hits that switch and turns it on. Whenever I'm taking it off, I'm trying to move quickly, stir the ice cream or scoop it off into a container to put in the freezer, so it's always irritating to take that lid off, quickly set it down, and have it turn on, the mixing arm starts turning, ice cream splatters, etc. This happens every time. There's not really a better way to set it down. So I have to unplug it whenever I want to put it down on the counter. It's just not very well thought-through.

Similarly, the locking mechanism involves pivoting that big blue arm up and over from one side to the other, which is cumbersome; the electric cord gets in the way, and even when you get it right, it's not a terribly snug fit; the motor can rock back and forth a bit.

Overall, you get what you pay for, and the other brands really aren't that much more expensive. Don't be a tightwad like me; splurge for one of them instead of this.

Cuisinart Ice-45 Mix-It-In Soft-Serve 1-1/2-Quart Ice-Cream Maker Review

Cuisinart Ice-45 Mix-It-In Soft-Serve 1-1/2-Quart Ice-Cream MakerIn reading the reviews for this product, I've noticed that some people may have been expecting something more than what Cuisinart is selling. Having used this unit several times now, here are my impressions and thoughts.
- The unit uses a freezer bowl to freeze the product. That means that the bowl MUST be frozen solid and the product MUST be very well chilled, otherwise you will not get good results. We have just kept our freezer bowls in the deep freeze when not in use so that we can make ice cream fairly quickly. It's probably best to mix up your soft serve mix at least an hour in advance and put it in the coldest part of your fridge or (as another reviewer suggested) in the freezer for 10-15 minutes to get it as cold as possible without prematurely freezing it.
- The freezer bowl doesn't have a huge capacity. It can make "10-12" servings - if your servings are small. 6-8 is probably more like it. If you want more, make certain you purchase an additional bowl and keep it frozen.
- The instructions on time expectations generally say 10-15 minutes, and this can be true if you chill the ice cream mixture very thoroughly. Otherwise it will take longer, probably more like 15-20 minutes.
- The first serving or so may be fairly soupy - I have found that I can dispense some into a cup and then re-add that into the top of the bowl.
- The "mix-ins" really don't mix in to the soft serve at all, they are really topping dispensers. If you're expecting something like a DQ Blizzard, it's not the same. Also, don't over-fill (or pack in) the mix in bins. I've had good luck with chopped peanuts, sprinkles and the mini M&Ms.

The differences between this unit and a more conventional ice cream freezer are mainly that this unit has a freezable bowl vs. a bowl that is placed in a mix of ice and rock salt. That means it is a little more convenient, but lacks the capacity of the conventional freezer. Our ice cream freezer makes about twice as much ice cream as the soft serve, but it is much louder, generally requires more clean up and doesn't dispense the product. On the other side, I think a conventional freezer has more versatility if you are making things like frozen custards that set up harder than soft serve. Finally, the freezer just isn't really as much "fun" as this one is which has real appeal if you've got kids in the family.

Overall, I've really enjoyed this gadget - but I did some research first and made certain I understood what I was buying. This is NOT like the soft serve dispensers in restaurants - but it's very nice for a treat on a summer afternoon.

Cuisinart ICE-21 Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker Review

Cuisinart ICE-21 Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet MakerAs this product had not been reviewed yet, I read several reviews for the Cuisinart ICE-20 Ice Cream Maker before making my decision to purchase this product. Many comments about the ICE-20 mentioned that the ice cream is the consistency of soft serve; some reviewers said it was too soft. I did not find that issue with the ice cream I made with this ice cream maker. I turned my freezer to the coldest setting and froze the bowl for 7 hours. I could not hear any liquid moving in the bowl at that point, so I assumed it was solidly frozen. I made the Simple Vanilla Ice Cream recipe from the booklet that came with the machine. After about 20 minutes, the ice cream was nicely textured and creamy. It wasn't as hard as the packed ice cream you purchase at the store, so I guess you might say the consistency was somewhere between soft serve and store-bought:firmer than soft serve, but not as firm as hard pack. As reviewers of the ICE-20 pointed out, if the ice cream was frozen as solidly as hard pack in the machine, it would be difficult to remove it from the container.

The ice cream is simply wonderful. It has a fresh, pure taste that outshines anything I could purchase from the store. I bought it mainly because I wanted to have control of my ingredients. I want to use organic products as much as possible and I want to experiment with soy ice creams; I have thought I might want to get away from dairy products altogether.

This product was listed as the newest version of the ICE-20 and as an upgrade that improves upon the ICE-20 while still keeping its popular features. I don't know what the upgrade consists of, but I can say that in 20-25 minutes, I had really excellent ice cream that I thought was the perfect consistency. After freezing it for a couple of hours it was firmer and I liked it at that consistency, too. I was thinking about how great this ice cream would be with warm apple pie, because tasting it really is like tasting fresh vanilla cream. But we're a couple of months away from apple pie season! This product couldn't be simpler to use, and I think it will pay for itself fairly quickly in savings over the cost of premium purchased ice cream. And it just tastes better.

DeLonghi GM6000 Gelato Maker with Self-Refrigerating Compressor Review

DeLonghi GM6000 Gelato Maker with Self-Refrigerating CompressorBeing a manager of a kitchen retail store gives me a little edge because I can see a few of these machines in person. Our store carries the Cuisinart Ice Cream maker that has the prefreeze bowl, we also carry the Cuisinart self refrigerated unit, and the Delonghi gelato machine. We use the Cuisinart prefreeze models for our demo's we do
on Saturday's at the store. It works, but it's not the most impressive ice cream you've ever had.
I wanted something better. I looked at both of the other units I listed above. The Cuisinart unit didn't feel well made to me. I took out the bowl, etc and the arm that goes across the top of the machine to the bowl feels like it will be only a matter of time before that gets broke. I decided to try the Delonghi model.
I have used it several times now. I love it!! The first recipe I made was butter pecan ice cream. It was excellent and the machine had it ready in 30 minutes. It can take an extra ten minutes if you add alcohol to your recipe (and this recipe used Jack Daniels). The next recipe was chocolate hazelnut gelato. OMG...Yummy!
Everything we've made has been great. The machine is very simple to use and it works great. I'm very happy with my decision and hope this helps you if you're debating between machines. I would recommend this machine.
I've read that many people didn't like the Cuisinart unit because it's very loud when you use it.
This machine is not very loud. I would say that it's quieter than a blender running. I can still watch tv with it running without upping the volume. It's pretty easy to clean too. There is one area that can get crumbs when you add nuts, etc. I just wipe around in there with a moist q-tip and that's about the only "problem" I can find with this unit. I also purchased The Perfect Scoop book by David Lebovitz. Excellent recipes. Haven't found a dud yet and it also has great resources in the back of the book in regards to ordering ingredients, etc.
Hope this helps with your decision :)

Impress dinner guests with delicious, authentic gelato--like the kind found in an Italian gelato shop--thanks to this easy-to-use countertop appliance. The unit's mixing paddle effectively blends ingredients, from top to bottom, for smooth, delicious results, while its built-in self-refrigerating compressor brings ingredients to temperatures below freezing, which frozen-bowl ice-cream makers can't do. Its built-in compressor makes it possible to mix up multiple batches, one after the other, without having to wait to re-freeze the ice-cream bowl--a nice detail when making multiple batches during a family reunion or backyard barbecue. Furthermore, it uses an energy-efficient, eco-friendly refrigerant (non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-corrosive) that doesn't deplete the ozone layer like other refrigerants. The gelato maker also provides a transparent lid for keeping an eye on the mixing process, a removable stainless-steel bowl for easy serving and cleanup, and a recipe booklet with great-tasting ideas for getting started. When finished wowing friends and family, the bowl, lid, and paddle clean up easily by hand or in the dishwasher. The gelato maker measures 12-4/5 by 15-4/5 by 9-3/5 inches.

Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker (The Ice Cream Ball) Review

Play and Freeze Ice Cream MakerI received the Ice Cream Ball (in Green) for Mother's Day after I mentioned it would be fun to have when I saw it on the Food Network.Even though it does not make a large amount of ice cream, it makes enough to satisfy one's cravings without going to all the trouble of a normal ice cream maker. You put ice and rock salt in one end and the ice cream mix in the other.I made vanilla the first time. Then my family and I went outside and rolled the ball, tossed it short distances to one another (it is much too heavy with all the ice to throw far,) and generally shook the heck out of it.I did have to drain the melted ice once and refill with more ice and rock salt. After 20-25 minutes I opened the ice cream container and ice cream had been made.It was a little soupy in the middle, but I had to scrape the sides to get the solid portion out.If I would have "played" with the ball a little more all of the mix would have beensolid. This method of making home-made ice cream definately would not work for a large number of people or a b-day party. But it works to satisfy a craving for 1-3 people. I guess you could say that you burned enough calories making the ice cream, that you should not feel guilty eating it!!

Product Description:
With the unique Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker, you can make ice cream while on camping trips, at picnics, barbecues, and many other places. You don't need electricity to make great tasting ice cream, but rather just add ice and rock salt in one end and ice cream mix in the other end. Then, have a ball as you shake it, pass it, or roll it around for 10 to 15 minutes. The ice cream mix can be as simple as cream, sugar, and vanilla or you can try a more adventurous flavor from the included recipe list or make up your own concoction. Made of durable advanced materials, the Ice Cream Ball is lightweight, portable, and easy to clean.

Step 1, fill with ice.

Step 2, mix up ingredients.

Step 3, shake it up.

Step 4, enjoy. How it Works:

Fill the ice end with as much ice as possible, then add 1/2 cup of rock salt to the pint size or 3/4 cup to the Mega size. The lid should be hand tightened--do not use the wrench.
Mix up your ice cream ingredients in a container, then pour the mix into the end with the metal cylinder, leaving about one inch for expansion at the top. Hand tighten the lid.
Have a ball! Shake, roll, and pass it around as you mix and freeze the ingredients. It's not necessary to shake the ball...just motion will do it.
After about 10 minutes for the pint size and 15 minutes for the Mega ball, open the ice cream end using the included plastic wrench. Scrape the sides of the cylinder to mix up the ice cream using a plastic or wooden spoon (don't use a metal spoon as it will scratch the cylinder). Then check the ice end. Pour out the excess water and add more ice and up to 1/3 cup more rock salt to enhance the freezing ability. Close the lids securely and continue having a ball for approximately 5 to 10 more minutes (15 for the Mega).
You will then have about a pint (or quart for the Mega ball) of delicious soft-serve ice cream. The consistency will vary based on the ice, your mix, the outside temperature, shaking frequency, etc. Once the ice cream is to the consistency of your liking, gently scoop it out and enjoy!

Important tips for using your Play & Freeze Ice Cream Maker:

Directions and recipes are inside the Ball.
Use cream instead of half and half for richer tasting ice cream.
Leave about an inch of space for expansion when you fill up the can with the ice cream mix.
After 10 minutes (15 for Mega ball) of mixing (shaking, rolling, and passing), it is important to stir the ice cream mix (it freezes more around the can). Also, drain the water and refill with ice and additional rock salt. Have fun for another 10 to 15 minutes and you're done.
Use the provided plastic wrench to open the ball, but not to close it.

Cuisinart ICE-50BC Supreme Ice Cream Maker Review

Cuisinart ICE-50BC Supreme Ice Cream MakerLike another reviewer, I was happy to see a compressor machine available for a reasonable price. I'd owned a smaller machine with a bowl that was placed in the freezer, but the ice cream wasn't as creamy as I wanted and the results varied dramatically from batch to batch.

Armed with a gift certificate (plus quite a bit more), I ordered this machine. For the fourth of July, I made 3 flavors for a party (vanilla, chocolate, & stawberry--I went with the basics), making the bases for each the night before. The next morning, I froze all three ice creams in less than two hours. Witha compressor machine, it's easy to make multiple batches one after the other. And the ice cream was a hit at the party, too.

Some tips:
1. The first batch I made was a simple recipe from the instructions which contained no eggs. While it turned out OK, it couldn't compare with custard-based ice creams that include egg yolks. The custard bases consistently result in smoother, creamier, and richer ice cream.
2. Try to make the ice cream base the night before you'll be freezing it (especially custard bases). It allows the flavors to blend and ensures the base is cold. A cold base will freeze more rapidly and is less likely to develop ice crystals.
3. When making chocolate ice cream, using quality chocolate rather than cocoa gives a richer flavor.
4. It's much easier to make ice cream when there's no need to have lots of ice androck salt or remember to pre-freeze bowl wich may or may not fit in the freezer.
5. It also can freeze sorbets and sherberts and make slushies for the kids. I suppose you could make frozen drinks with it, but I'll stick to the blender for those.

I'm very happy with it so far. It seems well made, produces great ice cream, and has a larger capacity than many other compressor units. While I expect to usually make a half-batch at a time, the 1 1/2 quart capacity plus the ability to quickly freeze multiple batches is great for those times when you need lots of ice cream.
